Nexus 7 16GB tablet out of stock at Google Play store
The 16GB version of Google's Nexus 7 is out of stock, as evident by the "Coming Soon" Google Play store. The 8GB version is in stock and ships within 3 to 5 business days. Apparently, Google thought that the $199 8GB version would be the big seller, according to reporting by the Guardian:"The Guardian understands that Google's planners had thought that buyers on the Google Play store, more than from physical or online retailers, would be more committed to the company's "cloud" concept, and so would have more of their content stored online, rather than wanting to keep it on the device."  Retailers such as Staples, Sam's Club and Office Depot are also having a hard time satisfying demand for the Nexus 7. Buyers who can't wait to procure a 16B Nexus 7 tablet might find one at a cost of $300 to $400 on eBay.CNET reviewer Eric Franklin rated the Nexus 7 as the best 7-inch tablet available at this time (read the full review). He wrote, "With a beautiful screen, fast performance, a comfortable design, and overall great media options, the Nexus 7 is easily the best 7-inch tablet available and one of the top tablets on the market." Apple is rumored to be prepping a 7.85-inch iPad to compete in what is turning out to be a popular form factor for tablets.

Next-gen iPad available in 3-4 months--report
Updates on the status of the next-generation iPad are becoming more frequent as the Asia-based supply chain gears up for production. That latest report says the next iPad will be available in three to four months. Why by April? Component manufacturers have already started delivering next-gen iPad parts to original equipment manufacturers, according to a report in Taipei-based Digitimes. Related storiesProduction starts for iPad 3 QXGA display: AnalystiPad 3 rumor roundupChinese device manufacturing giant Foxconn will begin to produce the future iPads in January and "ramp up" production volume starting in February, Digitimes said, citing a report in the Chinese-language Commercial Times, which, in turn, cites Kevin Chang, an analyst at Citigroup Global Markets. The report goes on to claim that as manufacturers gear up for the new iPad, there will be a corresponding decline in production of the iPad 2--to between 4 million and 5 million units in the first quarter of 2012, the report said, citing sources. Production of the newest iPad is expected to hit almost 10 million units in the first quarter of 2012, according to estimates.

Next-gen iPad Mini possibly delayed until 2014 -- report
Apple's next-generation iPad Mini might not be available until 2014, a new report claims.Apple doesn't plan to start mass production on its next-generation iPad Mini until the fourth quarter of 2013, DigiTimes reported on Monday, citing sources within Apple's supply chain. That would mean that the device won't launch until 2014.The delay is due mainly to the Retina Display, which Apple plans to include in the iPad Mini, the site's sources claim. The display technology isn't difficult to produce, but Apple needs to build up a stockpile in the 7.9-inch size to get the right number of devices onto store shelves. Apple also reportedly is considering designing a nearly bezel-less front to the next-generation iPad Mini.Although DigiTimes' sources are spotty, to say the least, the report comes weeks after Citi Research reported that a Retina version won't be available until next year. NPD DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim shared the same information last month. Those looking for a new iPad Mini, however, might not need to wait until next year: DigiTimes sources say that Apple plans to launch an updated version of its current slate in the second half of 2013. That device, however, will not come with a Retina screen.

Next-gen Apple TV gets J33 codename
Next-gen Apple TV gets J33 codename
The next generation of Apple TV appears to be moving closer to reality.Hints of the much-rumored product appeared today in a new beta of iOS 5.1 given to developers. As 9to5Mac notes, as products move closer to release, Apple gives them a codename, such as N94 for the latest iPhone. In this case, the blog found notes in the string code that refer to the next version of Apple TV as J33.9to5MacApple's current Apple TV model is a bit long in the tooth when it comes to processing power. The small set-top box sports an A4 processor, which Apple has since replaced in devices such as the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S with the dual-core A5.9to5Mac suggests the A5 could churn out something better than the 720p video at which the current Apple TV tops out. Apple's latest iPhone has a 1080p video output. Amazon recently updated its listing for the current Apple TV, redesignatingit as the "(2010)" version of the product. By comparison, Amazon lists the most up-to-date version of other Apple products, such as the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, as the "(NEWEST VERSION)," suggesting that the 2010 label could be a precursor to it being outdated by something newer.

Next iPhone 'will have thinner screen'- WSJ
Next iPhone 'will have thinner screen': WSJ
The next-generation iPhone will feature a thinner display that incorporates in-cell technology, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. In-cell technology would mean the iPhone's touch sensors and LCD are combined into a single layer, doing away with the need to have a separate touch-screen layer. As well as enabling thinner screens, in-cell panels are also thought to be cheaper to produce than the current two-layer set-up.LCD screen makers Sharp, LG Display, and Japan Display are mass-producing the in-cell panels for the screen, according to the Journal. Apple's use of in-cell technology is seen as part of its efforts to take on Samsung's own push on OLED technology. OLED is found in Samsung's current flagship device, the Galaxy S III, which boasts a 4.8-inch screen and a design that shaves a few millimeters off the iPhone's thickness. The thinner screen could come as part of a move by Apple to increase the screen size of the next iPhone; the Journal reported in May that the forthcoming device will sport a 4-inch display.Previous generations of the iPhone, despite several design changes, have retained a 3.5-inch screen since the device's debut in 2007. The next-generation iPhone is expected to launch in or around October, in time for the holiday-shopping season.

New Verizon CEO eyes next iPhone in the fall
New Verizon CEO eyes next iPhone in the fall
Incoming Verizon Communications Chief Executive Lowell McAdam said he expects the next iPhone to launch in the fall, although even he isn't sure. "You will have to ask Apple that, but we expect that probably sometime in the fall, and I think you will see a significant jump there when we get to that point," McAdam said today during a conference call. McAdam explained that Verizon's plans to push more customers into smartphones have lagged a bit because it previously thought a new iPhone would launch in the summer. With the next iPhone delayed, people have been holding off on upgrading to the Apple device. As a result, he said the company was a quarter behind on its targets. At the beginning of the year, Verizon set a goal of getting half of its contract customer base on smartphones. In the second quarter, the company had hit 36 percent. AT&T, meanwhile, said half of its base use smartphones already. Verizon earlier today reported swinging to a second-quarter profit thanks to the strength in its 4G LTE products, as well as the continued popularity of the iPhone. Verizon also said McAdam would takeover as CEO on August 1. Outgoing CEO Ivan Seidenberg, who set the succession plan last year, will retain his role as chairman.

New MacBook Pros having issues with iTunes Home Sharing
New MacBook Pros having issues with iTunes Home Sharing
The overall consensus seems to be that this is a software issue, specifically related to the new MacBook Pro models that Apple released in late February. ASD user Gnufist writes:"I just spent 2 hours on the phone with Apple, and finally talking with a Senior engineer. It is now a known issue and they are expecting to release a software update soon (I was welcome to call back to her direct number if I did not see an update on the message board soon about when the new release would come)." Gnufist also reports that a workaround for this issue may be available. If you're having problems with Home Sharing, check to see if your computer's firewall is activated. If it is, try turning it off and restarting your MacBook Pro. "I found that there was an old bug with home sharing and the firewall back from 2009 that somehow blocks the TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 which home sharing is using, even though iTunes is in the allow list in the firewall."If the firewall setting is indeed why the issues are occurring, expect the next release of Mac OS X to address these concerns. Of course we will keep an eye on future releases and let our readers know if any more workarounds surface in the meantime.Have you experienced this issue? Do you have a workaround? iTunes 9.0.3 released
iTunes 9.0.3 released
Apple has released iTunes 9.0.3, which addresses a number of bugs found in previous versions of iTunes 9. The update provides a number of important bug fixes, including:iTunes no longer ignores your "Remember password for purchases" setting. Addresses problems with syncing some Smart Playlists and Podcasts with iPod. Resolves a problem recognizing when iPod is connected. Addresses issues that affect stability and performance. The "remember password for purchases" fix will be very popular, since it has been the biggest complaint we've ever received from iPhone Atlas readers about iTunes.iTunes 9.0.3 is available for download via Software Update or you can grab the installer from CNET Download.com for Windows and Mac.There is currently no indication that this update adds features for iPad, but it's really to early to tell that yet. If you find support for the iPad or have other comments about the update please let us know by posting a comment. Updated 02/02/2010 at 6:47 AM PST: Mr. Dee commented that he is still experiencing performance issues during syncing, which is usually related to the Camera Roll. I suggest reading iPhone backups--David's iPhone tip of the week for a quick and easy fix for this common problem.
